Paris Trout, a venomous bigot in the segregated South, runs a store and a loansharking operation. He thrives on dragging people to court, which brings his lawyer, Harry Seagraves, into contact with Hannah, Paris's wife. A former schoolteacher, Hannah made a catastrophic mistake by marrying Paris, who subjects her to relentless brutality. But when Paris crosses the line of what even his community will tolerate, his actions trigger a descent into twisted madness.
